They lived in shantytowns, white and black together, protested and rallied for their cause. Roy Wilkins saw the model for racial integration here; J. Edgar Hoover built his reputation against the radicals. President Hoover, Army Chief of Staff Douglas MacArthur, and others feared the protesters would turn violent after the Senate defeated the "bonus bill" that the House had passed. On July 28, tanks rolled as troops evicted the marchers. Newspapers and newsreels showed graphic images of American soldiers driving out their former comrades in arms. Democratic candidate Franklin Roosevelt said to an adviser, "This will elect me," though bonus armies would plague him as well. The march inspired Congress to pass the G.I. Bill of Rights in 1944.--From publisher description. 610 20 $a Bonus Expeditionary Forces. 650 0 $a World War, 1914-1918 $x Veterans $z Washington (D.C.) 650 0 $a Protest movements $z Washington (D.C.) $x History $y 20th century. 651 0 $a Washington (D.C.) $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Veterans $z United States $x History $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Veterans $z United States $x Economic conditions $y 20th century. 700 1 $a Allen, Thomas B. 856 42 $3 Contributor biographical information $u http://www.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy0618/2004055483-b.html 856 42 $3 Publisher description $u http://www.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy0618/2004055483-d.html 941 $a 21 952 $l OZAX845 $d 20240525034914.0 952 $l JNPC081 $d 20231227011606.0 952 $l GLAX641 $d 20231201010403.0 952 $l PLAX964 $d 20230718082503.0 952 $l YCPD572 $d 20220518011702.0 952 $l F3OX522 $d 20180524034021.0 952 $l E7OX522 $d 20180524015353.0 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20171227053606.0 952 $l 44SX715 $d 20170615012348.0 952 $l ZVPB675 $d 20160927160146.0 952 $l USUX851 $d 20160823024933.0 952 $l YKPE532 $d 20130314033005.0 952 $l HRPE845 $d 20090701080000.0 952 $l KEPC896 $m 973.91 Dic $d 20090701080000.0 952 $l OMAX631 $d 20090701080000.0 952 $l PNAX964 $d 20090701080000.0 952 $l PTAX572 $d 20090701080000.0 952 $l PWAX296 $d 20090701080000.0 952 $l UNUX074 $d 20090701080000.0 952 $l UQAX771 $d 20090701080000.0 952 $l UTAX314 $d 20090708133753.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=E96B6E2E2B0811DEBA4F1C08A8D7520A 994 $a 02 $b E9BInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
