Lee describes the collection as an important record of Black visual self-representation and a means to "reflect the way Black people saw themselves on their terms--without the intention of being seen, or judged, by others." To Lee, these powerful photographs are an expression of "Black life mattering." These vivid images chronicle milestones such as weddings, birthdays and graduations, as well as quiet daily moments, offering contemporary views long ignored or erased by mainstream culture. Together, these works highlight the role snapshots have played in Black life, as tools to challenge stereotypical portrayals and as a means to memorialize family, culture and heritage. Topics such as self-representation, visual history and the social power of photographs are addressed in critical texts by Sophie Hackett, Stefano Harney, Zun Lee and Fred Moten, and an original contribution by celebrated poet Dawn Lundy Martin."-- $c Provided by publisher. 610 20 $a Art Gallery of Ontario $x Photograph collections $v Exhibitions. 650 0 $a African Americans $x Social life and customs $v Exhibitions. $v Exhibitions. 650 0 $a African American families $v Exhibitions. $v Exhibitions. 650 0 $a Vernacular photography $v Exhibitions. 650 0 $a Instant photography $v Exhibitions. 650 6 $a Noir americains $x Moeurs et coutumes $v Expositions. $v Expositions. 650 6 $a Familles noires americaines $v Expositions. $v Expositions. 650 7 $a African American families. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00799152 650 7 $a African Americans $x Social life and customs. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00799703 655 7 $a Exhibition catalogs. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01424028 655 7 $a Exhibition, pictorial works. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01424187 655 7 $a Photobooks. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01919950 655 7 $a Exhibition catalogs. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Photobooks. $2 lcgft 700 1 $a Lee, Zun, $e curator. $e curator. 700 1 $a Hackett, Sophie, $d 1971- $e curator. $e curator. 700 1 $a Martin, Dawn Lundy, $e contributor. 700 1 $a Harney, Stefano, $d 1962- $e contributor. 700 1 $a Moten, Fred, $e contributor. 710 2 $a Art Gallery of Ontario, $e publisher. $e publisher. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231117021908.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=24D7ECA6F47811EDA3FB15433FECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
