For scholars interested in early American history, the new emphasis on the connections throughout the Atlantic has been particularly rewarding. This book offers a different approach to the study of the Atlantic World, one that strikes a balance between the ability of a grand thesis to allow broad generalizations and comparisons, and the ability of more focused studies to provide detail. Through this comparative study, the author argues that the English participants in first contact attempted to assert their control over the natives of region by placing them into categories that were both recognizable and inferior, using ideas of class and gender hierarchies. The native peoples were not quick to give up their sources of power, however, and were often able to assert their own control over the situation. 520 8 $a The disjuncture between English literary pretensions to superiority and their actual dependence on native peoples led to increasing friction and ultimately, violence. This study makes important contributions to the study of race, class, and gender in the Atlantic World on the eve of colonization."--BOOK JACKET. 651 0 $a Great Britain $x History $x History $y 16th century. 650 0 $a British $z Foreign countries $x History $y 16th century. 650 0 $a British $z Foreign countries $x History $y 17th century. 651 0 $a Great Britain $x History $x History $y 17th century. 651 0 $a Great Britain $x Foreign relations $y 1485-1603. 651 0 $a Great Britain $x Foreign relations $y 1603-1625. 651 0 $a Great Britain $x Administration. $x Administration. 650 6 $a Britanniques $z Pays eÌtrangers $x Histoire $y 16e sieÌcle. 650 6 $a Britanniques $z Pays eÌtrangers $x Histoire $y 17e sieÌcle. 651 6 $a Grande-Bretagne $x Histoire $x Histoire $y 16e sieÌcle. 651 6 $a Grande-Bretagne $x Histoire $x Histoire $y 17e sieÌcle. 651 6 $a Grande-Bretagne $x Relations exteÌrieures $y 1485-1603. 651 6 $a Grande-Bretagne $x Relations exteÌrieures $y 1603-1625. 651 6 $a Grande-Bretagne $x Administration. $x Administration. 650 7 $a British colonies. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01910374 650 7 $a British $x Foreign countries. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00839050 650 7 $a Diplomatic relations. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01907412 650 7 $a Colonies $x Administration. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00868457 651 7 $a Great Britain. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204623 650 17 $a Engelsen. $2 gtt 650 17 $a Cultuurcontact. $2 gtt 651 0 $a Great Britain $x History $x History $y 16th century. 650 0 $a British $z Foreign countries $x History $y 16th century. 650 0 $a British $z Foreign countries $x History $y 17th century. 651 0 $a Great Britain $x History $x History $y 17th century. 651 0 $a Great Britain $x Foreign relations $y 1485-1603. 651 0 $a Great Britain $x Foreign relations $y 1603-1625. 651 0 $a Great Britain $x Administration. $x Administration. 648 7 $a 1485-1699 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 $i Online version: $a Perreault, Melanie. $t Early English encounters in Russia, West Africa, and the Americas, 1530-1614. $d Lewiston, N.Y. : Edwin Mellen Press, ©2004 $w (OCoLC)647013593 941 $a 1 952 $l PLAX964 $d 20240724061326.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=0855CACA214711EEBC7340321FECA4DB 994 $a 92 $b IOHInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
