It was a Wednesday, early in September 1952. The Cardinals were five games behind the Dodgers with three weeks to go, and the season looked hopeless. The cotton, however, was waist-high to my father, over my head, and he and my grandfather could be heard before supper whispering words that were seldom heard. It could be a 'good crop'." Thus begins from author John Grisham, a story inspired by his own childhood in rural Arkansas. The narrator is a farm boy named Luke Chandler, age seven, who lives in the cotton fields with his parents and grandparents in a little house that's never been painted. The Chandlers farm eighty acres that they rent, not own, and when the cotton is ready they hire a truckload of Mexicans and a family from the Ozarks to help harvest it. For six weeks they pick cotton, battling the heat, the rain, the fatigue, and, sometimes, each other. As the weeks pass Luke sees and hears things no seven-year-old could possibly be prepared for, and finds himself keeping secrets that not only threaten the crop but will change the lives of the Chandlers forever. This is a moving story of one boy's journey from innocence to experience. 526 0 $a Accelerated Reader $b Grades 9-12 $c 5.8 $d 19 $x SD $z English fiction, vocabulary quiz available. $z English fiction, vocabulary quiz available. 511 0 $a Read by David Lansbury. 650 0 $a Boys $v Fiction. 651 0 $a Arkansas $v Fiction. 650 0 $a Farm life $v Fiction. 650 0 $a Rural families $v Fiction. 650 0 $a Cotton farmers $v Fiction. 650 0 $a American fiction $y 20th century. 650 1 $a Boys $v Fiction 650 7 $a Boys. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00837358 650 7 $a Cotton farmers. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00880966 650 7 $a Farm life. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00921052 650 7 $a Rural families. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01101623 651 7 $a Arkansas. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204809 650 7 $a Boys $v Fiction. $2 sears 650 7 $a Bildungsromans. $2 sears 651 7 $a Arkansas $v Fiction. $2 sears 655 7 $a Detective and mystery fiction. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01726581 655 7 $a Bildungsromans. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01726536 655 7 $a Baseball stories. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01726531 655 0 $a Baseball stories. 655 2 $a Bildungsromans 655 4 $a Bildungsromans 655 4 $a Historical fiction $v Juvenile fiction 655 4 $a Domestic fiction 655 7 $a Domestic fiction. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01726589 655 7 $a Fiction. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01423787 655 7 $a Mystery fiction. $2 gsafd 655 7 $a Coming of age stories. $2 gsafd 655 7 $a Detective and mystery fiction. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Bildungsromans. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Fiction. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Bildungsromans. $2 unknown 776 08 $i Online version: $a Grisham, John. $t Painted house. $b 1st ed. $d New York : Doubleday, 2001 $w (OCoLC)606545617 856 41 $3 Sample text $u http://catdir.loc.gov/catdir/samples/random042/2001266464.html 856 42 $3 Contributor biographical information $u http://catdir.loc.gov/catdir/bios/random053/2001266464.html 856 42 $3 Publisher description $u http://catdir.loc.gov/catdir/description/random044/2001266464.html 941 $a 1 $n 1 952 $l GVPC501 $d 20210614153947.0 $n 10 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=2F39B722AC3311EB98A411E3203FDB2A 994 $a C0 $b IOZInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
