Disraeli wrote a second volume which now comprises books 5-8 of the novel as it is currently published. According to critic Wendy Burton, this severely bowdlerized, revised 1853 edition, lost much of the charm and freshness of the original 1826 edition. 520 $a The novel follows Vivian Grey, a misguided and arrogant young man who is ruthless in his pursuit of power, from childhood through his attempt to succeed in the world of politics. Vivian attempts to organise a party around the Marquess of Carabas, but is thwarted by his inexperience and naivete. The catastrophe at the conclusion provides Vivian with a brutal but essential lesson in human behavior. 545 $a As a third generation Englishman of what was originally an Italian Jewish family, British statesman Benjamin Disraeli, 1st Earl of Beaconsfield, was raised by parents who regretted their own ethnicity. Although his father Isaac D'Israeli himself never converted, after the death of his own father and a quarrel with local synagogue leaders, he had his children baptized, technically making British citizenship and all of its advantages available to them (such as the ability to own land, attend universities and hold political office-- advantages denied to any English resident who was not a member of the Church of England). Disraeli became the country's first (and so far only) Prime Minister of Jewish heritage, and played an instrumental role in the creation of the modern Conservative Party. Before and during his political career, Disraeli was also well-known as a literary and social figure, mainly writing romances, of which Sybil and Vivian Grey are perhaps the best-known today. 500 $a Volume number from DLC record for the series, OCLC 4420200. 530 $a Also available online from China Academic Digital Associative Library (CABAL), Hong Kong. 650 0 $a Young men $v Fiction. 650 0 $a Politicians $v Fiction. 650 0 $a British $z Europe $v Fiction. 650 6 $a Jeunes hommes $v Romans, nouvelles, etc. 650 6 $a Hommes politiques $v Romans, nouvelles, etc. 650 6 $a Britanniques $z Europe $v Romans, nouvelles, etc. 650 7 $a British. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00839044 650 7 $a Politicians. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01069915 650 7 $a Young men. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01183263 651 7 $a Europe. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01245064 655 7 $a Fiction. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01423787 655 7 $a Political fiction. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01726702 655 7 $a Political fiction. $2 lcgft 710 2 $a Longmans, Green, and Co. 776 08 $i Online version: $a Disraeli, Benjamin, Earl of Beaconsfield, 1804-1881. $t Vivian Grey. $b New impression. $d London : Longmans, Green, 1919 $w (OCoLC)564070206 800 1 $a Disraeli, Benjamin, $d 1804-1881. $t Novels & tales. $s Longmans, Green, and Co. ; $v 10. 856 41 $3 Links to original 1826 edition ("volume 1") from Internet Archive $u https://archive.org/details/viviangrey01disra 856 41 $3 Online version of 1882 edition of Vivian Grey from CADAL $u http://lookup.lib.hku.hk/lookup/bib/B31420886v1 941 $a 1 952 $l PLAX964 $d 20230718043256.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=C1911592214411EEBC7340321FECA4DB 994 $a 92 $b IOHInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
