Frictionless and cheap digital networks circulate information in ways which either authors or subjects are unable to trace or control. Servers store data which can be found on the world wide web years after it has ceased to be accurate or relevant to its original use. These developments have given rise to a movement promoting a 'right to be forgotten': an argument that freedom of expression should be balanced by a right to erase information which affects an individual, under certain conditions. Rights to privacy therefore need extending and strengthening in the digital era. This strand of thinking influenced a significant judgment delivered by the European Court of Justice in May 2014. As a result, the dominant internet search engine in Europe, Google, has been required to remove links to hundreds of thousands of pieces of information on application from individuals who considered their interests harmed. We know very little of how these delinking choices are made. This book looks at the implications of this controversial decision for free expression, journalism and information in the digital public sphere. Two rights, free speech and privacy, collide in a new way in age of information saturation. Is the judgment a threat to freedom of information and the accuracy of the historical record or the first step in establishing essential new rights in the digital era"--Back cover. 610 27 $a EuropaÌische Union. $2 gnd 650 0 $a Right to be forgotten $z European Union countries. 650 0 $a Privacy, Right of $z European Union countries. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2010108387 650 0 $a Digital media $x Law and legislation $z European Union countries. 650 0 $a Information technology $x Law and legislation $z European Union countries. 650 7 $a Digital media $x Law and legislation. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01766035 650 7 $a Information technology $x Law and legislation. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00973111 650 7 $a Privacy, Right of. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01077444 650 7 $a Right to be forgotten. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01923116 651 7 $a Europe $z European Union countries. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01269470 650 7 $a Mitgliedsstaaten. $2 gnd 650 7 $a Recht auf Vergessenwerden. $2 gnd 650 7 $a Redefreiheit. $2 gnd 650 7 $a Informationsfreiheit. $2 gnd 710 2 $a Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/nb2009016586 830 0 $a RISJ challenges. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2011034802 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231019015913.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=FCA448E0033911E8972C924897128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
