The Maastricht Treaty introduced the citizenship of the Union, while the Treaty of Amsterdam included the concept of democracy in the core values of the EU and 'Lisbon' construed the European Union as a democracy without turning the Union into a State. This development has not been foreseen by politicians and scholars. According to the prevailing theories the EU should have become either a sovereign State of Europe or a Europe of sovereign States. The theory of democratic integration, which is presented in this monograph, replaces the outdated paradigm of the Westphalian system of international relations with the civic perspective of democracy and the rule of law. From this angle, it seems obvious that, if two or more democratic states decide to share the exercise of sovereignty in a number of fields with the view to attain common goals, the organisation they establish for this purpose should be democratic too. The theory of democratic integration allows for the development of the EU to be summarised in the maxim that the Union is evolving from a Common market to a common democracy.0. 610 20 $a European Union. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2007008498 610 27 $a European Union. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00916630 610 27 $a EuropaÌische Union. $2 gnd 651 0 $a Europe $x Economic integration. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85045678 650 0 $a Citizenship $z European Union countries. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008100837 650 0 $a Democracy $z Europe. 650 4 $a EU/EC European Union. 650 4 $a EU/EC Integration. 650 4 $a European idea. 650 4 $a European citizenship. 650 4 $a Democracy. 650 7 $a UE/CE Union europeÌenne. $2 eclas 650 7 $a UE/CE InteÌgration. $2 eclas 650 7 $a IdeÌe europeÌenne. $2 eclas 650 7 $a CitoyenneteÌ europeÌenne. $2 eclas 650 7 $a DeÌmocratie. $2 eclas 650 7 $a Citizenship. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00861909 650 7 $a Democracy. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00890077 650 7 $a International economic integration. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00976879 651 7 $a Europe. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01245064 651 7 $a Europe $z European Union countries. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01269470 650 7 $a StaatsangehoÌrigkeit. $2 gnd 650 7 $a Gemeinsamer Markt. $2 gnd 650 7 $a Demokratie. $2 gnd 650 7 $a Integration. $2 gnd 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231017022306.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=B5180A7AF11E11E79D0FC10F97128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
