A novel which analyzes why Westerners are willing to spend years amid the squalor and poverty of India. The protagonists are Matteo, an Italian, and Sophie, his German wife. For Matteo, India provides the spiritual peace lacking in his society, for Sophie, who has to think of their children, Matteo is deluding himself, victim of a con game by clever people.
