Based on extensive fieldwork conducted with activist organizations and individuals, Phillips illustrates key theoretical ideas--including illiberal pragmatics and neoliberal homonormativity--that, in combination with the introduction of the Internet, have shaped the manner by which LGBT Singaporeans are framing and subsequently claiming rights. Phillips argues that the activism engaged in by LGBT Singaporeans for governmental and societal recognition, is in many respects virtual. His analysis documents how the actions of activists have resulted in some noteworthy changes in the lives of LGBT Singaporeans, but nothing as grand as some would have hoped, thus indexing the "not quite" aspect of the virtual. Yet, Virtual Activism also demonstrates how these actions have encouraged mainstream Singaporeans to fight even harder for their rights, signaling the "possibilities" that the virtual holds."-- $c Provided by publisher. 530 $a Issued also in electronic format. 650 0 $a Gay rights $z Singapore $v Case studies. 650 0 $a Gay activists $z Singapore $v Case studies. 650 0 $a Sexual minorities $z Singapore $v Case studies. 650 0 $a Gay liberation movement $z Singapore $v Case studies. 650 0 $a Internet $x Social aspects $z Singapore $v Case studies. 650 0 $a Homophobia $z Singapore $v Case studies. 650 6 $a Homosexuels $x Droits $z Singapour $v Etudes de cas. 650 6 $a Activistes homosexuels $z Singapour $v Etudes de cas. 650 6 $a Minorites sexuelles $z Singapour $v Etudes de cas. 650 6 $a Mouvement de liberation des homosexuels $z Singapour $v Etudes de cas. 650 6 $a Internet $x Aspect social $z Singapour $v Etudes de cas. 650 6 $a Homophobie $z Singapour $v Etudes de cas. 650 7 $a Gay activists. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00939048 650 7 $a Gay liberation movement. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00939104 650 7 $a Gay rights. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00939213 650 7 $a Homophobia. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00959727 650 7 $a Internet $x Social aspects. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01766793 650 7 $a Sexual minorities. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01202158 651 7 $a Singapore. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01205288 650 7 $0 (FrPBN)11947850 $a Homosexuels $x Droits $0 (FrPBN)11947850 $z Singapour. $2 ram 650 7 $0 (FrPBN)11947850 $a Minorites sexuelles $0 (FrPBN)11947850 $z Singapour. $2 ram 650 7 $0 (FrPBN)11947850 $a Homophobie $0 (FrPBN)11947850 $z Singapour. $2 ram 655 7 $a Case studies. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01423765 655 7 $a Case studies. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Etudes de cas. $2 rvmgf 776 08 $i Online version: $a Phillips, Robert (Professor of anthropology) $t Virtual activism. $d Toronto ; Buffalo ; London : University of Toronto Press, 2020 $z 9781487536282 $z 9781487536282 $w (OCoLC)1140970287 830 0 $a Anthropological horizons. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231117021912.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=B42ADC42CF3111EB9A1890BA3BECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
