Organized around two principal episodes--the 1932 Constitutionalist Revolution and 1954's IV CentenaÌrio, the quadricentennial of SaÌo Paulo's founding--this book shows how both elites and popular sectors in SaÌo Paulo embraced a regional identity that emphasized their European origins and aptitude for modernity and progress, attributes that became--and remain--associated with "whiteness." This racialized regionalism naturalized and reproduced regional inequalities, as SaÌo Paulo became synonymous with prosperity while Brazil's Northeast, a region plagued by drought and poverty, came to represent backwardness and SaÌo Paulo's racial "Other." This view of regional difference, Weinstein argues, led to development policies that exacerbated these inequalities and impeded democratization.--Amazon.com. 651 0 $a SaÌo Paulo (Brazil : State) $x History $y 20th century. 651 0 $a SaÌo Paulo (Brazil : State) $x History $y Revolution, 1932. 651 0 $a SaÌo Paulo (Brazil : State) $x History. $x History. 650 0 $a Racism $z SaÌo Paulo (State) $z SaÌo Paulo (State) 651 0 $a Brazil $x History $y 20th century. 651 6 $a SaÌo Paulo (BreÌsil : EÌtat) $x Histoire. $x Histoire. 650 6 $a Racisme $z SaÌo Paulo (EÌtat) $z SaÌo Paulo (EÌtat) 651 6 $a BreÌsil $x Histoire $y 20e sieÌcle. 650 7 $a Race relations. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01086509 650 7 $a Racism. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01086616 651 7 $a Brazil. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01206830 651 7 $a Brazil $z SaÌo Paulo (State) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01330480 650 7 $a Regionale IdentitaÌt $2 gnd 650 7 $a Ethnische Beziehungen $2 gnd 651 7 $a SaÌo Paulo $g Staat $2 gnd 648 7 $a 1900-1999 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 830 0 $a Radical perspectives. 941 $a 1 952 $l PLAX964 $d 20230718091924.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=BC085B32214711EEBC7340321FECA4DB 994 $a 92 $b IOHInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
