At the 2005 World Summit the international community accepted the responsibility to protect populations from these crimes when the domestic state is failing to do so. The implementation of the responsibility to protect, however, leaves much to be desired. This book studies the role dictators play in orchestrating mass atrocities and analyses their decision-making process when the international community tries to stop or mitigate the perpetration of these crimes. 0Through a comparative case study of Pol Pot and Slobodan Milosevic it argues that the role ideology plays in the decision-making process of the dictator is an important determinant of their responsiveness. In doing so, it challenges the common notion that all dictators are primarily motivated by retaining their position of power and argues that while dictators are frequently characterised as raging mad men, this is not necessarily always the case. It rather argues in favour of a more nuanced approach to rationality, that uses the work of Max Weber to acknowledge that different types of rationality exist, when analysing the decision-making process of dictators. The book is therefore an indispensable resource for scholars who are interested in the role of dictators in bringing forth and stopping mass atrocities and for anyone who wants more insight into the rationality of dictators. 650 0 $a Responsibility to protect (International law) $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2011004274 650 0 $a Atrocities $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Crimes against humanity (International law) $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2013003534 650 0 $a Dictators. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85037695 650 0 $a Rationalism. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85111520 650 17 $a Internationaal strafrecht. $2 gtt $0 (NL-LeOCL)078547601 650 17 $a Humanitaire interventie. $2 gtt $0 (NL-LeOCL)148484190 650 17 $a Genocide. $2 gtt $0 (NL-LeOCL)078517052 650 17 $a Misdrijven tegen de menselijkheid. $2 gtt $0 (NL-LeOCL)095977317 650 17 $a Dictatuur. $2 gtt $0 (NL-LeOCL)078484278 650 7 $a Atrocities. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00820727 650 7 $a Crimes against humanity (International law) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01909431 650 7 $a Dictators. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00892873 650 7 $a Rationalism. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01090275 650 7 $a Responsibility to protect (International law) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01895199 648 7 $a 1900 - 1999 $2 fast 655 7 $a Proefschriften (vorm) $2 gtt $0 (NL-LeOCL)088144445 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 830 0 $a Series Supranational criminal law ; $v v. 22. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2004007120 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20191214022744.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=CEB1BF20EC6A11E7AF65C16E97128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
