This victory made the Zhou a dynastic power in their own right, and they would extend the borders of their political control significantly beyond those of the Shang over the next three centuries. The Zhou introduced a political ideology centered on the Mandate of Heaven to justify their victory over the Shang and their expansion into and control of that huge expanse of territory, bestowing the Zhou king, as the Son of Heaven, with the sanction and, indeed, the responsibility to create a unified civilization. This ideology coalesced into what we call today a core-periphery perspective that highlights cultural assimilation and political integration across Zhou territory. However, recently excavated materials present a much more complex picture of Zhou policy, particularly in the frontier regions of Zhou territory. In Many Worlds Under One Heaven, Yan Sun analyzes a wide range of these newly excavated materials-tombs, inscriptions, artifacts, and more-to construct a new model of identity construction and power relations in the northern frontiers of the Western Zhou. By shifting focus away from the search for a dynastic core to an analysis of diversity and flexibility in identity on the frontiers, Sun unsettles the core-periphery model while also providing a theoretical reconsideration of the role of material culture in periods of rapid social and political change"-- $c Provided by publisher. 650 0 $a Material culture $z China $x History. 650 0 $a Borderlands $z China $x History. 650 0 $a Group identity $z China $x History $y To 1500. 651 0 $a China $x History $y Zhou dynasty, 1122-221 B.C. 651 0 $a China $x Social life and customs $y To 221 B.C. 651 0 $a China $x Politics and government $y To 221 B.C. 650 7 $a Borderlands. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01723579 650 7 $a Group identity. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00948442 650 7 $a Manners and customs. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01007815 650 7 $a Material culture. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01011739 650 7 $a Politics and government. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01919741 650 7 $a Zhou Dynasty (China) $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01696787 651 7 $a China. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01206073 648 7 $a To 1500 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 $i Online version: $a Sun, Yan, 1970- $t Many worlds under one Heaven $d New York : Columbia University Press, [2021] $z 9780231552622 $w (DLC) 2020051676 830 0 $a Tang center series in early China. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231117013802.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=DABDE642EE0211ECABFB385646ECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
