Rather than locating these shifts in statutory reform or economic development, it finds the origin in litigations that occurred in the wake of industrial accidents incurred by young workers. Drawing on archival case records from the Appalachian South between the 1880s and the 1920s, the book argues that young workers and their families envisioned an industrial childhood that rested on negotiating safe workplaces, a vision at odds with child labor reform. Local court battles over industrial violence confronted working people with a legal language of childhood incapacity and slowly moved them to accept the lexicon of child labor. In this way, the law fashioned the broad social relations of modern industrial childhood"--Provided by publisher. 505 0 $a Prologue : The job -- Big enough to work -- The divine right to do nothing -- Mashed to pieces -- Natural impulses -- An injury to all -- The dawn of child labor -- Epilogue : Get up and play. 650 0 $a Child labor $x History. $z United States $x History. 650 0 $a Workers' compensation $x History. $z United States $x History. 650 0 $a Industrial safety $x History. $z United States $x History. 650 0 $a Child labor $z United States $x History. 830 0 $a Cambridge historical studies in American law and society. 856 41 $3 Table of contents only $u http://www.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy1005/2010000033-t.html 856 42 $3 Publisher description $u http://www.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy1005/2010000033-d.html 856 42 $3 Contributor biographical information $u http://www.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy1005/2010000033-b.html 856 42 $3 Cover image $u http://assets.cambridge.org/97805211/55052/cover/9780521155052.jpg 941 $a 7 952 $l PLAX964 $d 20230718085958.0 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20180105031204.0 952 $l USUX851 $d 20160825074415.0 952 $l UXAX826 $d 20150505014309.0 952 $l OIAX792 $d 20120410010703.0 952 $l N5UX522 $d 20100630011038.0 952 $l UNUX074 $d 20100526051111.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=7E7A3D3C68AD11DF8AE56C90C41A358D 994 $a 02 $b LUIInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
