Summary:
Heartworn highways: In 1976 producer Graham Leader and director James Szalapski documented the outlaw songwriter scene that extended from Austin to Nashville. On their travels, they met unknown musicians Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, and John Hiatt, plus their musical mentors Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt. They covered singer-songwriters whose songs diverge from the traditions of the previous generation, instead recalling early folk and country music.
Heartworn highways revisited: Marking the 40th anniversary of Heartworn highways, filmmakers reunite with Heartworn originals Guy Clark, Steve Young and David Allan Coe whil focusing on the next generation of "outlaws" including John McCauley, Jonny Fitz and others who honor the traditions of their predecessors while forging a highway all their own.
