Presented during Voices of Diversity, the third international conference on the short story in English, sponsored by the Society for the Study of the Short Story, held June 4-7, 1994, at the University of Northern Iowa and Iowa State University. Ramchand pays tribute to the West Indian writer, Samuel Selvon, reading his story "Brackley and the bed" and discussing his life and work as a native of Trinidad who wrote of West Indians in their homeland and as immigrants in London.
