Summary:
Set in 1908 on an obscure island in the Aegean, the film revolves around Basil Pascali, a spy for the decaying Turkish Empire, and Anthony Bowles, a British archaeologist who arrives there and leases a tract of land in order to dig for lost treasures. Pascali discovers that Bowles is a con man and that he intends to fleece the Turkish authorities on the island by pretending to find valuable loot and leasing them back their own property. This knowledge leads to blackmail and eventually death.
