Summary:
A study of courage and cowardice in the face of almost insurmountable odds. After establishing the characters of the protagonists in a long prologue, director Clouzot follows them as they transport a cargo of nitroglycerin over a primitive mountain road to a conclusion of high suspence and final irony.
