A young girl describes the summer of 1912 when her little sister gets very sick and when unusual creatures that look like small flying dogs come from the Don River to her home in Toronto. The summer of 1912 is a time of odd happenings for Margaret. She meets her father for the first time; her mother worries about losing her job; and her little sister succumbs to disease. Onto the scene come the dippers--furry, ungainly dog-like creatures with leathery wings--unnerving but not dangerous, yet another fact of life to become adjusted to. Barry Moser's wonderful, mysterious illustrations make this marvelous fantasy come alive. Full color.
