Summary:
The Stein family, Americans of German origin, settled in Paris at the start of the 20th century. The family included Gertrude, an avant-garde writer, her brothers Leo and Michael, and Michael's wife Sarah. The Steins were the first to buy works by Matisse and Picasso. They opened up their homes to the artistic avant-garde movement and built an outstanding modern art collection.
