Summary:
This book is a first-hand account of the rise of militancy in Swat (Pakistan) and the trajectory of the conflict that resulted. Majeed argues that Swat's weak and broken judicial system, poor governance and institutional vacuum allowed the Taliban to gain a foothold there. The military operation in 2009 finally brought the situation under control in Swat and led to the reestablishment of the writ of state. The author, however, effectively argues that there is a possibility of a resurgence of the conflict if the structural cause of the conflict is not addressed by the state.
