Summary:

"In 2005, Hellmut Schlingensiepen and Christian Coers produced a film with the German title 'Wer glaubt, der flieht nicht...' (Engl.: 'He who believes will not flee...'), by order of the German section of the International Bonhoeffer Society. The film is about the politically active Christian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the theologian in the German resistance. In just under 25 minutes, the film tells the story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was killed for his conviction in the concentration camp of Flossenbürg in 1945. The film lets Bonhoeffer himself talk about the role of the church in the Nazi rule of injustice and the individual's responsibility. It points out the dilemma of Christians in resistance, having to decide between God's commandment 'Thou shalt not kill' and the necessity of killing a tyrant. The film shows private photographs from Bonhoeffer's life and descriptive visual material of contemporary history. In addition, the film uses collages of picture and sound from excerpts from 'Wochenschau', the German newsreel, and quotes of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The self-staging of the Nazi regimen that can be dangerously fascinating to the audience even today, is interrupted by the words of Dietrich Bonhoeffer who is contemporary witness and admonisher at the same time.
