Summary:
In an industrial district of England during the early 1930's a family struggles to survive and maintain its dignity. When the hard-working daughter Sally sees that her brother and his family are about to be thrown onto the streets for rent money, she becomes the mistress of a rich gangster. This and other grim events transform her from a radiant, sweet angel into a cynical woman of the world.
