Summary:
Gwen, 13 years old, has been adopted by a tribe of nomads and lives with them in a world completely covered with dunes. Under the sand lives a terrible Thing that is a constant, threatening presence. To escape the Thing, the tribe takes refuge at the bottom a a pit at sundown. Only Gwen dares to spend a night in the dunes, accompanied by a young boy, the son of Roseline. The Thing kidnaps the boy and Roseline, having decided to recover her son, leads Gwen on a journey to the City of the Dead.
