Summary:

Handicapped by impaired hearing and epilepsy, 17-year-old Alice Guthrie spent most of her impoverished life locked in a shed by her ignorant, abusive step-father. When young Ellie Perkins and her teenaged brother Sammy discover Alice living in desperate plight, they secretly introduced her to the world of poetry, literature, music and friendship.
