Summary:
Handicapped by impaired hearing and epilepsy, 17-year-old Alice Guthrie spent most of her impoverished life locked in a shed by her ignorant, abusive step-father. When young Ellie Perkins and her teenaged brother Sammy discover Alice living in desperate plight, they secretly introduced her to the world of poetry, literature, music and friendship. In spite of local prejudices and her stepfather's threats, Alice and Sammy fall in love. As Alice's dreams are realized, their lives are changed.
