Summary:
Torment: The story of three people: a young student, his sadistic teacher, and the girl with whom they are both involved. In a fit of sexual rage the teacher kills the girl, and the boy has him arrested. However, the system favors the old man, he is released, and the boy is left to face the world with only bitterness and hatred.
Crisis: Nelly lives a quiet life with her foster mother, who despite her meager earnings, saves enough to buy her a new dress. However, when she also receives a new dress from her real mother, she wears that instead. She is attracted to the daring lights of Stockholm, and the hope of a more exciting life, so she moves there. She soon realizes that life in the big city is more complicated than the life she is accustomed to in a small town.
Port of call: Berit is depressed and suicidal. She has spent many years living in institutions because it is impossible for her to live with her overbearing mother. After living in the slums of Gothenberg she finds a job but it specifies that she must live with her mother. She decides to change her depressing life by meeting and socializing with others. She meets a sailor and soon discovers that she is not the only person with problems.
Thirst: Traveling by train from Switzerland to Sweden, Rut and Bertil, a married couple, revisits the bitterness between them. Bertil has had many love affairs but that is not the only aspect of their relationship which tears them apart. Rut is unable to conceive, due to her affair with Raoul and subsequent abortion. In the meantime Viola, the former mistress of Bertil, wanders through the city having been diagnosed as insane. She meets a lesbian who seduces her and pulls her more deeply into tragedy.
To joy: Explores the relationships between spouses and the responsibility of artists. Marta and Stig are both orchestral musicians, and are in love with each other. They decide to marry and have children. However, Stig begins an affair with another woman and threatens their marriage.
