Summary:
Four films from the Golden Age of Mexican cinema featuring strong women.
Toña Machetes: Toña Machetes, bastard daughter of cockfighting enthusiast Jeronimo Romero, inherits the Hacienda Tequilera "El Tejon" and the lands of her grandfather and, to demonstrate her power, marries the rich, aristocratic Jose Maria Esparza, from whom she lives separately. Toña later adopts a child, whom she believes to be the son of her husband, at first rejecting the boy but eventually becoming attached to him.
Maclovia: José María is a poor, illiterate fisherman in love with Maclovia, daughter of the chief of the Indians on the island of Janitzio. When the chief forbids them from seeing each other, José María goes to school to learn to write, so he can send a letter to Maclovia. When a violent, corrupt sergeant desires Maclovia, the father relents, deciding it is better for Maclovia to marry José María to protect her from the sergeant.
Señora Ama: Also known as The Lady of the House, is the story of a wealthy married couple has not been able to conceive any children -- despite the fact that the husband, Feliciano, has a reputation as a womanizer and has fathered many illegitimate children. (It is implied that his infidelity due to the inability of his wife to give him a son.) Compounding matters, the wife's younger sister, who lives with them, is attracted to the husband. because of the very strong sexual tension, the family decides that the younger sister must marry Feliciano's brother José, to which she reluctantly agrees even though she does not love him. Tensions arise later when Feliciano's wife falls ill.
Juana Gallo: Also known as The Guns of Juana Gallo, a dramatic (and largely fictional) interpretation of the life of Ángela Ramos Aguilar, nicknamed Juana Gallo for her spunky personality, who from an early aged did not follow the strict female code. After her father and fiance are executed by corrupt government officials, "Juana" rises in arms against the federal government and joins in the Mexican Revolution, fighting alongside the men from her region in what would become known as the Battle of Zacatecas.
