Summary:
In the Los Angeles of the thirties, a private detective takes on a seemingly routine matrimonial inquiry. His persistence in investigating leads to violence and murder as he uncovers evidence of public and personal corruption. Drought-stricken Los Angeles in 1937 is a disorientingly alien place. In this multi-layered narrative, marked by dark humour, the mysterious Chinatown, where social and moral norms break down, acts as a metaphor for a pervasive corruption implicating the past, the present and even the future.
