Summary:
Marcello Clerici, a fascist agent in Mussolini's Italy, recalls his past while on a mission to kill one of his former teachers, now an anti-fascist in Paris. Haunted by a childhood incident, Clerici has subordinated his values to the pursuit of what he perceives to be normal. Bertolucci amalgamates Marx with Freud to relate the psychological and the personal with the political and social. In articulating the contradictions that mark the mind of a fascist, the film is quasi-expressionist in its exaggeration of space and hallucinatory in its mingling of what Clerci actually sees, does not see or thinks he sees.
