Summary:
Breastfeeding initiation rates remain below national goals throughout most of the United States (CDC, 2004). The focus of this study was to create an office-based prenatal breastfeeding educational program was devised to be incorporated into routine prenatal visits with the primary care provider. Twenty-nine women completed a series of five educational sessions. Each participant completed a pretest, posttest, evaluation and follow-up call. Pretest and posttest scores were compared to evaluate participant learning. Follow-up data revealed that seventy-nine percent of the participants initiated breastfeeding immediately postpartum. This program's success could serve as an impetus for increasing office-based educational programs implemented by primary care providers to increase breastfeeding initiation.
