The book offers a fresh look at the diverse group of immigrants to America from Germany. Not only were they the largest population of immigrants in the nineteenth century, but diverse in their religious and political beliefs. And, following the anti-German hysteria during World War 1, the group learned to blend in, especially in the rural areas of the U.S.
