In 1850s South Carolina, just before nine-year-old Ashley was sold, her mother, Rose, gave her a sack filled with just a few things as a token of her love. Decades later, Ashley's granddaughter, Ruth, embroidered this history on the bag--including Rose's message that "It be filled with my Love always." Historian Tiya Miles carefully follows faint archival traces back to Charleston to find Rose in the kitchen where she may have packed the sack for Ashley. From Rose's last resourceful gift to her daughter, Miles then follows the paths their lives and the lives of so many like them took to write a unique, innovative history of the lived experience of slavery in the United States. The contents of the sack--a tattered dress, handfuls of pecans, a braid of hair, "my Love always"--Speak volumes and open up a window on Rose and Ashley's world. As she follows Ashley's journey, Miles metaphorically "unpacks" the sack, deepening its emotional resonance and revealing the meanings and significance of everything it contained. These include the story of enslaved labor's role in the cotton trade and apparel crafts and the rougher cotton "negro cloth" that was left for enslaved people to wear; the role of the pecan in nutrition, survival, and southern culture; the significance of hair to Black women and of locks of hair in the nineteenth century; and an exploration of Black mothers' love and the place of emotion in history-- $c Provided by publisher 505 0 $a Introduction: love's practitioners -- Ruth's record -- Searching for Rose -- Packing the sack -- Rose's inventory -- The auction block -- Ashley's seeds -- The bright unspooling -- Conclusion: it be filled. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references and index. 650 0 $a Women slaves $z South Carolina $v Biography. 600 00 $a Ashley $c (Enslaved person in South Carolina) 650 0 $a Mothers and daughters. 650 0 $a Women slaves $z Southern States $x Social conditions $y 19th century. 650 0 $a Slaves $x History $z Southern States $x History $y 19th century. 600 10 $a Middleton, Ruth Jones, $d 1903-1942 $x Family. 650 0 $a African American women $v Biography. 650 0 $a African American women $x Family relationships. 650 0 $a Memory $z United States. 655 7 $a Biographies. $2 lcgft 941 $a 66 952 $l OZAX845 $d 20240525041934.0 952 $l YEPF572 $d 20240509013509.0 952 $l ALPE516 $d 20240417020513.0 952 $l GOPG641 $d 20240409040712.0 952 $l SFPH074 $d 20240314022450.0 952 $l BRPD251 $d 20240119021119.0 952 $l UGPF911 $d 20231207014831.0 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231117012434.0 952 $l ETPD745 $d 20231025012649.0 952 $l BOPG851 $d 20231010022851.0 952 $l GBPF771 $d 20230802012239.0 952 $l NWPC663 $d 20230720010901.0 952 $l PLAX964 $d 20230718100302.0 952 $l CMPE792 $d 20230629014923.0 952 $l USUX851 $d 20230302020401.0 952 $l GKPC851 $d 20230228021047.0 952 $l YCPD572 $d 20230214011010.0 952 $l GMPD771 $d 20230210024014.0 952 $l UKPD911 $d 20230125013933.0 952 $l TRPE062 $d 20221230010530.0 952 $l BZPC851 $d 20221227135017.0 952 $l TAPB572 $d 20221202015104.0 952 $l XSPE157 $d 20221105011325.0 952 $l YKPE532 $d 20221028012141.0 952 $l XUPC157 $d 20221026010838.0 952 $l BJPD251 $d 20221008010339.0 952 $l TYPH572 $d 20221005014455.0 952 $l FYPI314 $d 20221004012855.0 952 $l WAPD715 $d 20220929013325.0 952 $l FXPH314 $d 20220909063942.0 952 $l WHPE115 $d 20220806015158.0 952 $l BVPE851 $d 20220728013247.0 952 $l XBPE737 $d 20220719014215.0 952 $l VXPE964 $d 20220608010821.0 952 $l UQAX771 $d 20220601010819.0 952 $l CQPE926 $d 20220428010616.0 952 $l DBPE173 $d 20220303010307.0 952 $l DYPD423 $d 20220208011154.0 952 $l YAPC771 $d 20220205012210.0 952 $l CBPF522 $d 20220203010536.0 952 $l ZYPE837 $d 20220202022323.0 952 $l HPPD845 $d 20220202012624.0 952 $l CYPF706 $d 20220202010038.0 952 $l UNUX074 $d 20220201015309.0 952 $l GHPD771 $d 20220201014642.0 952 $l XAPE737 $d 20220108011119.0 952 $l SAPG074 $d 20220104014831.0 952 $l YTPG232 $d 20220104011521.0 952 $l TFPI826 $d 20220104011334.0 952 $l EZPE755 $d 20211223010205.0 952 $l EAPA384 $d 20211214154646.0 952 $l KWPE446 $d 20211130010801.0 952 $l XXPH787 $d 20211002015602.0 952 $l SCPC074 $d 20210923011204.0 952 $l CAPH522 $d 20210910010430.0 952 $l WSPF215 $d 20210828025753.0 952 $l HOPC845 $d 20210821010413.0 952 $l GDPF771 $d 20210803015159.0 952 $l VMPC334 $d 20210724010658.0 952 $l GEPG771 $d 20210722065018.0 952 $l LAPH975 $d 20210713014223.0 952 $l TDPH826 $d 20210702012358.0 952 $l TCPG826 $d 20210702010609.0 952 $l KSPG296 $d 20210629011744.0 952 $l S1PD771 $d 20210629010410.0 952 $l BAPH771 $d 20210608010120.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=CB93243AC81E11EBA265461429ECA4DB 994 $a C0 $b IOUInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
