Abandoned by his parents, but kept on the straight and narrow by his grandmother, Elwood is about to enroll in the local black college. But for a black boy in the Jim Crow South of the early 1960s, one innocent mistake is enough to destroy the future. Elwood is sentenced to a juvenile reformatory called the Nickel Academy, whose mission statement says it provides "physical, intellectual and moral training" so the delinquent boys in their charge can become "honorable and honest men." In reality, the Nickel Academy is a grotesque chamber of horrors where the sadistic staff beats and sexually abuses the students, corrupt officials and locals steal food and supplies, and any boy who resists is likely to disappear "out back." Stunned to find himself in such a vicious environment, Elwood tries to hold onto Dr. King's ringing assertion "Throw us in jail and we will still love you." His friend Turner thinks Elwood is worse than naive, that the world is crooked, and that the only way to survive is to scheme and avoid trouble. The tension between Elwood's ideals and Turner's skepticism leads to a decision whose repercussions will echo down the decades. Formed in the crucible of the evils Jim Crow wrought, the boys' fates will be determined by what they endured at the Nickel Academy. 586 $a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, 2020 586 $a ALA Black Caucus Award, 2020 (Fiction) 610 20 $a Florida School for Boys $v Fiction. 650 0 $a Abuse of administrative power $v Fiction. 650 0 $a African American boys $x Abuse of $v Fiction. 650 0 $a African American teenagers $v Fiction. 650 0 $a African Americans $z Southern States $x Social conditions $v Fiction. 650 0 $a Racism $v Fiction. 650 0 $a Reformatories $v Fiction. 650 0 $a Reformatories $x Corrupt practices $v Fiction. 650 0 $a African Americans $x Civil rights $v Fiction. 650 0 $a Male friendship $v Fiction. 650 0 $a Teenagers $v Fiction. 651 0 $a Frenchtown (Tallahassee, Fla.) $v Fiction. 651 0 $a Florida $v Fiction. 650 1 $a Racism $v Fiction. 650 1 $a Reformatories $v Fiction. 650 1 $a Reformatories $x Corrupt practices $v Fiction. 650 1 $a African Americans $z Southern States $x Social conditions $v Fiction. 650 1 $a African Americans $x Civil rights $v Fiction. 650 7 $a 18.06 Anglo-American literature. $0 (NL-LeOCL)077611985 $2 bcl 650 7 $a FICTION $x Coming of Age. $2 bisacsh 610 27 $a Florida School for Boys. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01925248 650 7 $a Teenagers. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01145551 650 7 $a Male friendship. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01006633 650 7 $a African Americans $x Social conditions. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00799698 650 7 $a African Americans $x Civil rights. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00799575 650 7 $a Abuse of administrative power. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00794802 650 7 $a African American teenagers. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00799406 650 7 $a Racism. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01086616 650 7 $a Reformatories. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01092581 651 7 $a Southern States. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01244550 651 7 $a Florida. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01205150 650 7 $a 18.06 Anglo-American literature. $0 (NL-LeOCL)077611985 $2 nbc 650 7 $a African American teenagers $v Fiction. $2 sears 650 7 $a Reformatories $v Fiction. $2 sears 650 7 $a African Americans $x Segregation $v Fiction. $2 sears 650 7 $a Racism $v Fiction. $2 sears 651 7 $a United States $x Race relations $v Fiction. $2 sears 651 7 $a Florida $v Fiction. $2 sears 655 0 $a Historical fiction. 655 0 $a Bildungsromans. 655 7 $a Novels. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01921742 655 7 $a Bildungsromans. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01726536 655 7 $a Fiction. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01423787 655 7 $a Historical fiction. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01726640 655 7 $a Historical fiction. $2 gsafd 655 7 $a Historical fiction. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Bildungsromans. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Novels. $2 lcgft 655 7 $a Fiction. $2 lcgft 941 $a 5 $n 1 952 $l BAPH771 $d 20240124130437.0 $n 10 952 $l BOPG851 $d 20211201094325.0 $n 12 $p + CD + LP 952 $l YTPG232 $d 20210805154541.0 $n 12 952 $l SAPG074 $d 20210601120406.0 $n 5 952 $l GBPF771 $d 20210525154704.0 $n 10 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=2E6353D0AC3311EB98A411E3203FDB2A 994 $a C0 $b IOZInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
