Summary:
The story of four generations of Japanese Brazilians. The film begins with a young woman, Titoe Yamada, moving temporarily, so she thinks, to Brazil in 1908. Shows how the family suffered through being gaijin (foreigner). The film ends in contemporary times when a woman breaks tradition and marries a non-Japanese man, who himself feels as if he is a gaijin when he is surrounded by his wife's family.
