Focusing on non-elite, mostly black enlisted men and the oppressive labor regimes under which they struggled, the book is an examination of the four-day Revolta da Chibata (Revolt of the Lash) of November 1910, during which nearly half of Rio de Janeiro's enlisted men rebelled against the use of corporal punishment in the navy. These men seized four new, powerful warships, turned their guns on Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's capital city, and held its population hostage until the government abolished the use of the lash as a means of military discipline. Although the revolt succeeded, the men involved paid dearly for their actions. This event provides a clear lens through which to examine racial identity, violence, masculinity, citizenship, modernity, and the construction of the Brazilian nation"-- $c Provided by publisher. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references (pages 295-310) and index. 505 0 $a Introduction: Race and Violence in Brazil and its Navy -- Legislating the Lash -- Control of the Lower Decks, 1860-1893 -- Roots of a Rebellion -- The Revolt of the Lash -- The Aftermath -- Conclusion: The Measure of a Revolution. 651 0 $a Brazil $x History $y Naval Revolt, 1910. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85016569 650 0 $a Sailors, Black $z Brazil $x Social conditions $y 20th century. 610 10 $a Brazil. $b Marinha $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Naval discipline $z Brazil $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Corporal punishment $z Brazil $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Slavery $z Brazil $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Blacks $x History $z Brazil $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Masculinity $z Brazil $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Citizenship $z Brazil $x History $y 20th century. 651 0 $a Brazil $x History $x History $y 20th century. 650 7 $a HISTORY $z Latin America $x South America. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a SOCIAL SCIENCE $x Slavery. $2 bisacsh 650 7 $a HISTORY $x Naval. $x Naval. $2 bisacsh 830 0 $a Blacks in the diaspora. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n84712981 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231020012306.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=BA4EE3F8FDB011E7BCC604F996128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
