Summary:
After witnessing an event involving semi-wild chimpanzees in which it was clear that the chimps had preplanned and communicated their actions, the author traced the individual histories of each of the chimpanzees involved. Their stories are interspersed with explanations of how scientists are attempting to train apes to use human grammar and language, using well-known but controversial examples such as Koko the gorilla, Kanzi the bonobo, and Nim Chimpsky the chimpanzee.
