Adrian Streete argues that this rhetoric is not simply an expression of religious bigotry, nor is it only deployed at moments of political crisis. Rather, it is an adaptable and flexible language with national and international implications. It offers a measure of cohesion and order in a volatile century. By rethinking the relationship between theatre, theology and polemic, Streete shows how playwrights exploited these connections for a diverse range of political ends. Chapters focus on playwrights like Marston, Middleton, Massinger, Shirley, Dryden and Lee, and on a range of topics including imperialism, reason of state, commerce, prostitution, resistance, prophecy, church reform and liberty. Drawing on important recent work in religious and political history, this is a major re-interpretation of how and why religious ideas are debated in the early modern theatre. 650 0 $a English drama $y 17th century $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a Religion and literature $z England $x History $y 17th century. 650 0 $a Apocalypse in literature. 650 0 $a Anti-Catholicism in literature. 650 0 $a Anti-Catholicism $z England $x History $y 17th century. 650 7 $a Anti-Catholicism. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00810287 650 7 $a Anti-Catholicism in literature. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00810291 650 7 $a Apocalypse in literature. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01896027 650 7 $a English drama. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00910737 650 7 $a Religion and literature. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01093839 651 7 $a England. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01219920 650 7 $a FruÌhneuenglisch $2 gnd $0 (DE-588)4352423-0 650 7 $a Englisch $2 gnd $0 (DE-588)4014777-0 650 7 $a Drama $2 gnd $0 (DE-588)4012899-4 650 7 $a Weltuntergang $g Motiv $2 gnd $0 (DE-588)4112551-4 650 7 $a Antikatholizismus $g Motiv $2 gnd $0 (DE-588)1026679435 650 7 $a Antikatholizismus $2 gnd $0 (DE-588)4354753-9 648 7 $a 1600-1699 $2 fast 655 7 $a Criticism, interpretation, etc. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411635 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231018021811.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=89AA6398FAD211E7A45C351A97128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
