Summary:
"Set in Romania in the 1920's in a border town on the left bank of the Danube. Lady Vovoreanu a grand dame of the old aristocracy, invites local dignitaries to a great ball at which the Dumitriu couple shine. Captain Dumitriu is a captain in the Romanian army. When his wife rejects the advances of General Ipsilanti, her husband is transferred to an isolated garrison on the other side of the Danube. In retaliation for the killing of Romanian border guards by Macedonian smugglers, he is ordered to take the local Bulgarian villagers hostage and execute them. Meanwhile his wife has developed a close friendship with the hostages"--Film Index International.
