Due to staffing shortages, particularly in the specialty areas, and the current economic climate in health care, nurses are being placed in advanced roles fro which they are not prepared. This paper presents an orientation program that was developed and implemented for the role of resource nurse in labor and delivery. Experienced nurse mentors played a critical role by providing support and guiding the role transition. This research project utilized the Novice to Expert Theory of Nursing by Patricia Benner, as well as general principles of adult learning by Malcolm Knowles, to achieve th goal of preparing nurses to practice independently as resource nurses. The success of the orientation program and the significance of nurse mentors were measured through participant evaluation, a questionnaire, and informal verbal feedback.
