Shannon O'Shea, part of a small party traveling west of the American colonies in 1756, loses her way in the forests, and when she finds shelter from a storm in a cave, she encounters a scarcely clothed Cherokee man who promises to keep her safe; although he disappears the next morning, he keeps his vow, and Shannon longs for his love, despite the fact that she is promised to wed another man.
