In part 1, still photographs and original recordings illustrate the development of the American musical from 19th century minstrel to the introduction of rock music in the 1960s. Part 2 discusses popular musicals of the 1970's, reflecting on the new focus on topical issues, the importance of the concept musical, the entry of Black productions in the Broadway mainstream, and other significant new trends of the decade.
