Reflecting on this remarkable phenomenon, 'Staging Asia' traces the passage of the stories surrounding three political revolutions from seventeenth-century Asia through to the Dutch Republic and their ultimate manifestation as dramas. This book explores the nature of the representation of the Orient in these plays and evaluates how this characterization was influenced by the channels that these dramatists relied on to gather information for their works. As these dramas exhibit strong connections to the Dutch East India Company, this work additionally examines the role of that enterprise in disseminating information on Asia and producing imagery about the Orient. Manjusha Kuruppath received her PhD from the Department of History, University of Leiden. Her research interests include literary history, history of the Dutch East India Company and early modern Asian history. 504 $a Includes bibliographical references and index. 610 20 $a Nederlandsche Oost-Indische Compagnie $x In literature. 610 20 $a Nederlandsche Oost-Indische Compagnie $x History $y 17th century. 610 27 $a Nederlandsche Oost-Indische Compagnie. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00548217 650 0 $a Dutch drama $y 17th century $x History and criticism. 650 0 $a Theater $z Netherlands $x History $y 17th century. 650 0 $a Orientalism in literature. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2001008934 651 0 $a Asia $x In literature. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2009114797 650 7 $a Dutch drama. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00899708 650 7 $a Literature. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00999953 650 7 $a Orientalism in literature. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01048143 650 7 $a Theater. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01149217 651 7 $a Asia. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01240495 651 7 $a Netherlands. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204034 648 7 $a 1600-1699 $2 fast 655 7 $a Criticism, interpretation, etc. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411635 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411635 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1411628 776 0 $z 9789400602564 (online) 776 0 $w (GyWOH)har165023210 776 0 $z 9789400602588 (online) 776 0 $w (GyWOH)har165023212 830 0 $a Colonial and global history through Dutch sources. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2017045876 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20180125015001.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=F173AB0C019D11E89C78220097128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
