Though the mass emigration it caused, its notoriety and impact spread far beyond Ireland. The Famine is often seen simply as Ireland's peculiar lesson in Malthusian economics, but Cormac OÌ GraÌda's survey suggests that a proper understanding of this disaster requires an analysis of the Irish economy before the invasion of the potato-killing fungus, Phythophthora infestans. Such an anaylsis properly highlights Irish povery and the key role of the potato. But it also points to some signs of economic progress in the pre-Famine decades, as well as the sheer statistical improbability of a series of harvest failures such as those of the late 1840s. 650 0 $a Famines $z Ireland $x History $y 19th century. 653 $a Famines, history $a Famines, history 710 2 $a Economic History Society. 941 $a 1 952 $l ULAX314 $d 20190926085632.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=BCD54668FBCE11DEB3E93EDF5F36B428 994 $a 02 $b IOLInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
