The chapters in this book invite readers to hold back quick judgement and instead engage with the conservative norms of sections of the middle class, the military, intellectuals and state ideologues. The opening chapter by the editors provides a historical overview of relevant themes and introduces the translated pieces. It also argues that the concept of a supra-constitution, first introduced by legal scholar Somchai Preechasilpakul in a brilliant lecture to the Pridi Banomyong Institute in 2007, is a powerful frame for interpreting conservative Thai politics. Somchai's lecture, now translated here, explains that an unwritten supra-constitution sits above the many failed constitutions that litter Thai history. Like a guiding spirit it contains evolving norms on military and monarchical power which circumscribe democratic political contest. 546 $a In English. 651 0 $a Thailand $x Politics and government $y 1988- $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99005518 651 0 $a Thailand $x Kings and rulers. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85134450 650 0 $a Constitutional history $z Thailand. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2009121521 650 0 $a Monarchy $z Thailand. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85086687 651 6 $a ThaiÌlande $x Politique et gouvernement $y 1988- 650 6 $a Histoire constitutionnelle $z ThaiÌlande. 650 7 $a Politics and government. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919741 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1919741 651 7 $a Thailand. $2 fast $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205310 $0 http://id.worldcat.org/fast/1205310 648 7 $a Since 1988 $2 fast 700 1 $a Connors, Michael Kelly, $e editor. $4 http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2002110516 700 0 $a Ê»Ukrit PatthamaÌnan, $e editor. $4 http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n88176732 710 2 $a NIAS Press, $e publisher. $4 http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/pbl $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2018224271 830 0 $a Asia insights (Nordic Institute of Asian Studies) ; $v 10. $0 http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2013051849 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20231117023924.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=95A99D64851711EEB4A9908744ECA4DBInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
