520    $a This purported "documentary" was one of the most notorious of the anti-Semitic films produced during the Nazi regime. Under instructions from Joseph Goebbels, Minister of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda, the film was designed to function as an integral part of an extensive anti-Semitic campaign and was to be shown in Nazi-controlled territories to prepare and incite local populations to support Jewish deportations. Fritz Hippler, the film's director and head of the film division of the Propaganda Ministry, shot footage in the Lodz ghetto during the war in Poland and integrated this with archival, newsreel and feature film sequences. The script was provided by Dr. Eberhard Taubert, a fervent Nazi behind many such projects. Scurrilous in content and violating the basic rules of documentary filmmaking, Der Ewige Jude compares Jews to rats and other vermin, denigrates Jewish rituals and celebrations and uses footage from the 1934 American film House of Rothschild entirely out of context to demonstrate the dishonesty of Jewish bankers. In the final scenes, Jewish ritual butchering practices are subjected to vile misrepresentation. What the film intentionally fails to mention is that the substandard conditions in which the Jewish population lived were the direct result of Nazi policies.
