A hominid discovers the first weapon, using a bone to kill prey. The bone is tossed in the air and it's a 21st century spacecraft hovering over the Earth, skipping ahead millions of years in technological development only to imply that man hasn't advanced very far at all psychologically. U.S. scientist Dr. Heywood Floyd travels to the moon to check out the discovery of a strange object on the moon's surface: a black monolith. As the sun's rays strike the stone, however, it emits a piercing, deafening sound that fills the investigators' headphones and stops them in their path. Cutting ahead 18 months, impassive astronauts David Bowman and Frank Poole head toward Jupiter on the space ship Discovery, their only company three hibernating astronauts and the vocal, man-made HAL 9000 computer running the entire ship. When the all-too-human HAL malfunctions, however, he tries to murder the astronauts to cover his error, forcing Bowman to defend himself the only way he can. Free of HAL, and finally informed of the voyage's purpose by a recording from Floyd, Bowman journeys to "Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite," through the psychedelic slit-scan star-gate to an 18th century room, and the completion of the monolith's evolutionary mission. 500 $a Special features: Commentary by Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood; "2001: the making of a myth" documentary; 4 featurettes "Standing on the shoulders of Kubrick: the legacy of 2001," "Vision of a future passed: the prophecy of 2001," 2001: A Space Odysseyv- a look behind the future," and "What is out there?"; 2001: FX and Early Conceptual artwork; Look: Stanley Kubrick!; audio-only 1966 inverview with Stanley Kubrick conducted by Jeremy Bernstein; theatrical trailer. 586 8 $a Academy Awards, 1969: Oscar - Best Effects, Special Visual Effects (Stanley Kubrick) 650 0 $a HAL (Fictitious character) $v Drama. 650 0 $a Antiquities, Prehistoric $v Drama. 650 0 $a Astronauts $v Drama. 650 0 $a Interplanetary voyages $v Drama. 650 0 $a Computer system failures $v Drama. 650 7 $a ArqueologiÌa, PrehistoÌrico $v Teatro. $2 bidex 650 7 $a Astronautas $v Teatro. $2 bidex 650 8 $a HAL (Fictitious character) $v Drama. 650 8 $a Antiquities, Prehistoric $v Drama. 650 8 $a Astronauts $v Drama. 650 8 $a Interplanetary voyages $v Drama. 650 8 $a Computer system failures $v Drama. 655 0 $a Feature films. 655 0 $a Fiction films. 655 0 $a Science fiction films. 655 0 $a Action and adventure films. 655 0 $a Fantasy films. 655 0 $a Video recordings for the hearing impaired. 655 7 $a Science fiction $v Feature. $2 migfg 655 7 $a Adventure $v Feature. $2 migfg 655 7 $a Fantasy $v Feature. $2 migfg 655 7 $a Feature films. $2 gsafd 655 7 $a Science fiction films. $2 gsafd 655 7 $a Adventure films. $2 gsafd 655 7 $a Fantasy films. $2 gsafd 700 1 $a Kubrick, Stanley. 700 1 $a Clarke, Arthur C. $q (Arthur Charles), $d 1917-2008. 700 1 $a Dullea, Keir, $d 1936- 700 1 $a Lockwood, Gary, $d 1937- 700 1 $a Sylvester, William, $d 1922- 700 1 $a Richter, Dan. 700 1 $a Rossiter, Leonard, $d 1926-1984. 700 1 $a Tyzack, Margaret, $d 1933- 700 1 $a Beatty, Robert, $d 1909-1992. 700 1 $a Sullivan, Sean, $d 1923-1985. 700 1 $a Rain, Douglas. 700 1 $a Clarke, Arthur C. $q (Arthur Charles), $d 1917-2008. $t Sentinel. 710 2 $a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. 710 2 $a Polaris (Firm) 710 2 $a Stanley Kubrick Productions. 710 2 $a Warner Home Video (Firm) 941 $a 12 945 $a blu 952 $l YCPD572 $d 20231206014728.0 952 $l FXPH314 $d 20220909020031.0 952 $l YEPF572 $d 20200204040057.0 952 $l TYPH572 $d 20200110022415.0 952 $l CDPF771 $d 20191004010312.0 952 $l TCPG826 $d 20190810010238.0 952 $l ETPD745 $d 20180808022954.0 952 $l EZPE755 $d 20170831010118.0 952 $l CAPH522 $d 20160702013448.0 952 $l SAPG074 $d 20160202042901.0 952 $l UNUX074 $d 20100914012329.0 952 $l AXPF626 $d 20090708133753.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=8CE124FA6BF411DEA13FF332A8D7520A 994 $a 02 $b LJWInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
