Volkmann enumerates and describes many of the works which illustrated the contemporary obsession with hieroglyph, emblem and device, particularly those from France and Germany, thus complementing Karl Giehlow's earlier Hieroglyphenkunde on the subject. Volkmann's book highlights both Renaissance theories of the image as language and the symbol as an aid to an understanding of the meaning of life and the nature of God. 0Raybould's translation has been described as elegant, admirable and impeccable and includes an introduction, extensive notes and several additional essays on topics relevant to the field. 650 0 $a Hieroglyphics $x History $y 16th century. 650 0 $a Emblems $x History $y 16th century. 650 0 $a Art, Renaissance $x Themes, motives. 650 0 $a Printers' marks. 650 7 $a Art, Renaissance $x Themes, motives. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00816802 650 7 $a Emblems. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00908357 650 7 $a Hieroglyphics. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00955976 650 7 $a Printers' marks. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01076605 648 7 $a 1500-1599 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 700 1 $a Raybould, Robin, $e translator. $e translator. 700 1 $i Translation of: $a Volkmann, Ludwig, $d 1870-1947. $t Bilderschriften der Renaissance. 776 08 $i Online version: $a Volkmann, Ludwig, 1870-1947, author. $t Hieroglyph, emblem, and Renaissance pictography $d Leiden ; Boston : Brill, 2018 $z 9789004367593 $w (DLC) 2018026681 830 0 $a Brill's studies in intellectual history ; $v v. 281. 830 0 $a Brill's studies in intellectual history. $p Brill's studies on art, art history, and intellectual history ; $v v. 28. 941 $a 1 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20191217025113.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=EE5C041AE96D11E8978F920F97128E48Initiate Another SILO Locator Search
