Summary:
Selected scenes from the first act of the Oxcart, a three-act play by renowned Puerto Rican playwright René Marqués, especially adapted for television. It portrays the migration of a poor Puerto Rican farm family from the countryside to the San Juan ghetto and eventually to Spanish Harlem in New York City. It is a dramatically compelling examination of the controversial issue of modern technology vs. a return to the land. René Marqués appears in a brief prologue to introduce his story. The drama is followed by a short documentary-style sequence entitled Impressiones, which presents the social problems the Puerto Ricans face in New York City.
