"Spring Night Summer Night first reached the screens in 1968 after five years of extraordinarily independent production. It was made with almost no budget in the remote coal-mining hills of Southern Ohio and tells the story of a young couple trapped in their cultural setting. She is pregnant by him. He may or may not be her brother. The need to act in the face of uncertainty drives the action, a thematic common to many art movies of the time. The film is as much about the feeling of its place as the plight of its central characters."--Container.
