Summary:
Ernst Jandl (1925-2000) is one of the most important poets of the 20th century. With his letter and sound poems he made himself an outsider in his native Vienna in the 1950s, but quickly found recognition in the centers of concrete poetry in Stuttgart, Prague and London. Like a pop star, he took the youth of the revolt generation into the painful areas of war, absurd everyday life and lack of love with his linguistic wit and play during loud performances. He counteracted the high tone with "run-down" language and cool dialect. With his life partner Friederike Mayröcker he created pioneering works of the 'New Radio Play'. After archival research in half of Europe and decades of activity in the Viennese cultural scene as a critic and editor, Hans Haider presents the first comprehensive biography of Jandl. --Amazon
