How did the "land of the free" become the home of the world's largest prison system? Challenging the belief that America's prison problem originated with the Reagan administration's War on Drugs, Elizabeth Hinton traces the rise of mass incarceration to an ironic source: the social welfare programs of Lyndon Johnson's Great Society at the height of the civil rights era. Johnson's War on Poverty policies sought to foster equality and economic opportunity. But these initiatives were also rooted in widely shared assumptions about African Americans' role in urban disorder, which prompted Johnson to call for a simultaneous War on Crime. The 1965 Law Enforcement Assistance Act empowered the national government to take a direct role in militarizing local police. Federal anticrime funding soon incentivized social service providers to ally with police departments, courts, and prisons. Under Richard Nixon and his successors, welfare programs fell by the wayside while investment in policing and punishment expanded. Anticipating future crime, policy makers urged states to build new prisons and introduced law enforcement measures into urban schools and public housing, turning neighborhoods into targets of police surveillance. By the 1980s, crime control and incarceration dominated national responses to poverty and inequality. The initiatives of that decade were less a sharp departure than the full realization of the punitive transformation of urban policy implemented by Republicans and Democrats alike since the 1960s."--Provided by publisher. 505 0 $a The war on black poverty -- Law and order in the great society -- The preemptive strike -- The war on black crime -- The battlegrounds of the crime war -- Juvenile injustice -- Urban removal -- Crime control as urban policy -- From the war on crime to the war on drugs -- Epilogue : reckoning with the war on crime. 650 0 $a Criminal justice, Administration of $x History $z United States $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Law enforcement $x History $z United States $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Urban policy $z United States $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Crime prevention $z United States $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Crime $x History $z United States $x History $y 20th century. 650 0 $a Imprisonment $z United States. 650 0 $a Police patrol $z United States $x Surveillance operations. 650 0 $a Discrimination in law enforcement $z United States $x History $y 20th century. 650 7 $a Crime $x Political aspects. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00883004 650 7 $a Crime prevention. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00883055 650 7 $a Criminal justice, Administration of $x Political aspects. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00883295 650 7 $a Imprisonment. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst00968277 650 7 $a Urban policy. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01162489 651 7 $a United States. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01204155 648 7 $a 1900 - 1999 $2 fast 655 7 $a History. $2 fast $0 (OCoLC)fst01411628 941 $a 17 952 $l PQAX094 $d 20231214053413.0 952 $l PLAX964 $d 20230718092541.0 952 $l LTAX046 $d 20220805011618.0 952 $l YCPD572 $d 20220518021104.0 952 $l BAPH771 $d 20210513010021.0 952 $l USUX851 $d 20201103013720.0 952 $l BOPG851 $d 20181006105312.0 952 $l ETPD745 $d 20180808032336.0 952 $l OVUX522 $d 20180112035930.0 952 $l SOAX911 $d 20170804010617.0 952 $l SCPC074 $d 20170728030819.0 952 $l PNAX964 $d 20170601010255.0 952 $l GAAX314 $d 20170601010036.0 952 $l TCPG826 $d 20170412011333.0 952 $l UQAX771 $d 20161115071202.0 952 $l SAPG074 $d 20160909012524.0 952 $l GBPF771 $d 20160802013838.0 956 $a http://locator.silo.lib.ia.us/search.cgi?index_0=id&term_0=26B1162847F611E6BC47F4DCDAD10320 994 $a C0 $b JIMInitiate Another SILO Locator Search
